Abstract

Introduction: In the world of Optometry, the loss of visual function, also known as ocular hysteria, has not had enough emphasis due to several factors. One of them, and perhaps the most important, is the low frequency of cases. However, we must give it the attention it deserves so as not to confuse it with visual simulation, since unlike disorders of psychological or psychiatric origin, in simulation there is an intention of conscious and reasoned fraud

Objective: Update and expand the information about these diagnoses through different articles.. Material and method: The literature search for the elaboration of this work is based on the following keywords: simulate functional visual loss, non-organic visual loss and hysterical amblyopia.

Development: Patients with loss of functional vision have real visual symptoms of which they have no control, and the only intention is to determine the cause of their visual dysfunction. The subjects know that they have a problem, and all they want is to find the solution to it. Therefore, the patient is allowed to do any type of test, and does it in a collaborative and cooperative way.

Conclusion: Through this literature review, and the experience accumulated by the authors on functional visual loss and visual simulation, it was concluded that there are crucial signs that allow differentiating a functional visual disorder from one with an organic basis; in the latter, physical evidence, and expected coherence in the measurements are verified, so an exhaustive study must be carried out in each particular case.
