Abstract

Introduction: Pathological grief has a high prevalence in different countries, and it is usually related to factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic, which has had a great impact on patients, family members, and
professionals’ mental health.

Objective: Describe the factors associated with the impact of pathological grief on the relatives of patients who died during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Methods: The review was carried out through an electronic search of several scientific articles related to the subject. The PEO question What are the factors for the impact of pathological grief in the Covid-19
pandemic? was used. The search sources were PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar. The keywords were: grief, adults, factors, COVID, psychological tests. Articles published from 2016 to 2022 were selected.

Results: 105 articles were found, but 80 were discarded because they did not meet our inclusion and exclusion criteria, remaining 25 articles for this literature review.

Conclusion: There is a moderate prevalence of factors associated with pathological grief in times of the COVID-19 pandemic: the capacity to assimilate death, due to unanticipated death, the powerlessness of
not being able to save a family member’s life, and the poor understanding with the lack of information and communication.
