Tourette Syndrome with Familial Aggregation

Introduction: Tourette syndrome is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and verbal tics beginning in childhood, and frequently associated with psychiatric comorbidity.
Objective: Describe the neuropsychiatric alterations in a patient with Tourette syndrome.
Case study: Male patient aged 15, with a history of "mania" consisting of nose wrinkling and gesticulations, adding repetition of monosyllables up to 6 times. From the age of 9, obsessive behavior is added. On psychiatric examination: complex motor tics, specifically shrinking of the nose and gesticulations, complex verbal tics, such as palilalia, and obsession with not uncovering the torso. The interview with his mother reveals simple motor tics, specifically blinking, also referring to an uncle with motor tics and copropraxia. The patient underwent treatment with a behavioral therapy technique for habit reversal, and treatment with Risperidone at low doses with attenuation of tics after 2 months.
Conclusions: Tourette syndrome is a rare cause of tics, and although its etiology is not fully known, its appearance is an option that should always be considered by the treating physician.
