Abstract

Introduction: Liev Vygotski carried out developmental, cross-cultural and clinical psychology studies, in his search to understand human consciousness. In this way, he conducted research on children, adolescents and schizophrenic patients to work out the development and disintegration of consciousness and its functions, in particular, the one related to conceptual thought.

Objective: Analyze the pathopsychology of schizophrenia according to Vygotski. Methods: Documentary review based on Vygotski’s work related to the pathopsychology of schizophrenia. Direct quotes were frequently used so as not to distort the author’s original ideas

Development: Works in which Vygotski addresses the disintegration of consciousness, thought, and psychological function of concept formation in patients with schizophrenia were reviewed. Likewise, some comments on the matter were made.

Conclusions: The reviewed information preserves its originality and usefulness for current psychiatry, as well as their historical importance, regarding the terms scission and dissociation, clinical signs that may still be subject of scientific research.
