Cognitive Disorders Related to Hypertension
Keywords:
cognitive impairment, hypertension, epidemiologyAbstract
Introduction: Vascular cognitive impairment affects 5 % of people over 65 years. On the other hand, data between 10 % and 12 % from progression of moderate cognitive impairment to dementia have been found in certain groups each year.
Objective: Characterize cognitive disorders related to hypertension.
Method: A documentary review type research of the qualitative paradigm, and exploratory investigative level was carried out. PubMed/Medline online database was consulted to identify the bibliography, applying a filter search strategy. The search strategy was mainly based on the use of keywords listed in the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), included in its Spanish version in the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS). These were combined with the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”. The included filters or activated limits were: any type of article with full text available, in English or Spanish, and published between January, 2018 and February, 2023. They were analyzed and those that did not provide relevant data were excluded.
Conclusions: There is a close relationship between hypertension and cognitive function impairment. Cognitive decline produces brain damage especially associated with risk factors, such as female sex, age, lack of physical exercise, smoking and others. Diagnostic tests, such as the clock test and the MOCA test are very valuable to define cognitive impairment diagnosis
