Psychopathological Development of Suicidal Behavior in Child and Adolescent Population

Introduction: Suicidal behavior has reached a great magnitude from the perspective of mental health, and implies a psychosocial disturbance that may exceed the coping capacity of the affected population.
Objective: Describe the psychopathological characteristics of suicidal behavior in the child and adolescent population in a mental health service.
Method: Retrospective, longitudinal descriptive study in the mental health service at José Martí Pérez Provincial Pediatric Hospital, from January, 2020 to January, 2022. The study population consisted of 225 patients under 19 years of age, admitted to the Mental Health Service, excluding from the study those patients hospitalized due to suicidal behavior who fled or requested discharge within 24 hours, therefore, with an inconclusive study. The universe was made up of 124 patients who met the inclusion criteria. The
entire study established for the appropriate approach was carried out.
Results: Ages between 14 and 16 years, and female sex predominated. Sancti Spiritus was the most affected municipality. Regarding the level of functioning, the neurotic level predominated. Considering suicidal behavior according to classification, there was a predominance of suicide attempt, and fe male sex was the most affected. The method with psychoactive drugs was the most used.
Conclusions: In Cuba, there is a program for the prevention of suicidal behavior, but despite this, suicides attempts continue to increase, something that is similar to the global panorama.
