Introduction: Emotional intelligence in healthcare personnel is vitally important for healthcare systems because it impacts service quality. Therefore, it must be constantly monitored using validated and easy-to-apply instruments.
Objective: To validate a brief emotional intelligence inventory (EQ-i-M20) in a Peruvian sample of healthcare personnel.
Methods: An instrumental study was conducted from April to July 2025 on a sample of 492 healthcare workers at the Regional Hospital of Ica, Peru. The EQ-i-M20 underwent content validation procedures and a pilot test; construct validity, discriminative validity, predictive validity, and reliability were reviewed.
Results: An abbreviated version of 16 items was generated, organized into a single general factor that explained 31.96% of the total variance and good model fit quality. The items and the global scale discriminate satisfactorily. Predictive validity and internal consistency with various statistics were adequate.
Conclusions: The Peruvian version (EQ-i-M16) of the EQ-i-M20 is valid and reliable for measuring emotional intelligence in healthcare workers. Its use is recommended in clinical practice and research.
