Use of Psychoactive Substances in Non-Addicted People during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Introduction: Mental health problems in the population that was quarantined during COVID-19 pandemic increased, including the consumption of alcohol and other drugs.
Objective: Determine the presence of addictive risk behaviors in patients who attended a psychology consultation at Dr. Carlos J Finlay Central Military Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out. The sample consisted of 40 patients selected through an intentional convenience sampling. The information was obtained from the medical records, and the results of the MULTICAGE CAD-4 questionnaire, in the alcohol and other drugs sections.
Results: The reasons for consultation were the request for psychological support and guidance, search for information, anxiety, fear and family management. The substances used were alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, psychotropic drugs, and there was also polydrug use. 65% of the patients studied reported the “absence” of problems with drugs. The categories of possible existence and certain existence of problem behavior for drugs were represented by 17.5% each. 25% reported “no” problems with alcohol, and 75% indicated the presence of alcoholic behavior.
Conclusions: More than half of the patients treated in the Psychology consultation in 2020, during COVID-19 pandemic had addictive risk behaviors for alcohol, and to a lesser extent for other drugs.
