Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is a complex stage of preparation and transition characterized by major physical, psychological and social changes. Conflicts and contradictions are generated in it, as there is a struggle to achieve full social maturity. Gender dysphoria is one of the most disturbing situations for these age groups where contradictions put their mental health at risk, and can lead to suicidal behavior.

Objective: Describe suicidal behavior in a patient with gender dysphoria.

Case report: Seventeen-year-old male adolescent with a history of follow-up by Child Psychiatry in his early stages of development. He was part of a dysfunctional family, with inadequate educational methods. He was admitted at the provincial pediatric hospital, in the multipurpose service because of the ingestion of tablets (carbamazepine, paracetamol, multivitamins) with suicidal purposes. He received life-sustaining medical treatment in the pediatric service. On the third day of admission, with improvement and clinical stability, he was transferred to the mental health service. After carefully studying and observing the patient's behavior, the events related to his psychopathological conditions that led him to this behavior were identified, reaching diagnostic conclusions and psychotherapeutic treatment.

Conclusions: Suicidal behavior has a multifactorial cause. In people with gender dysphoria, psychopathological conditions that lead them to suicidal behavior are generated.
