Clinical and epidemiological profile of adolescents with psychotic disorders treated at the Pediatric Hospital of Camagüey

Abstract

Introduction: Psychotic disorders in adolescents are serious conditions that affect the perception of reality, can include symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, and require specialized care for appropriate management.

Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of adolescents with psychotic disorders treated at the Camagüey Pediatric Hospital.

Methods: A descriptive study was conducted at the Camagüey Pediatric Hospital from June 2021 to June 2025. The sample consisted of 65 adolescents diagnosed with a psychotic disorder. The variables studied were age group, diagnosis at admission, sex, risk factors, length of hospital stay, municipality of origin, type of treatment, and clinical course.

Results: In the adolescent population with psychotic disorders, those aged 17-18 years predominated (49.2%), and the initial diagnoses were acute psychosis (69.5%), suicide attempt (7.7%), and psychomotor agitation (4.6%). Females were the majority (52.5%). The main risk factors were family history (7.8%), dystocic delivery (3.0%), and substance use (1.5%). Most were hospitalized for 1-7 days (72.4%), primarily from Camagüey (62.2%). Treatment was predominantly psychotherapeutic and pharmacological (62.9%), and the most frequent diagnosis at discharge was schizotypal disorder (49.3%). The outcome was favorable in 69.2% of cases.

Conclusions: It is essential to describe the clinical and epidemiological aspects of adolescents with psychotic disorders to understand their prevalence, risk factors, and specific characteristics. This allows for early diagnosis and timely treatment.

Keywords: Adolescents; psychotic disorders; schizophrenia; bipolar affective disorder.
